Die casting
For high-volume production of relatively complex metal parts, die casting is the most suitable manufacturing process. Die-cast parts are manufactured using steel molds, which are similar to those used in injection molding. In injection molding, plastics are used, while in die casting, metals with low melting points, such as zinc and aluminum, are used. Due to its precision, reliability, repeatability and versatility, die casting has become a commonly used process.
In the die casting process, high air pressure or hydraulic pressure forces molten metal into a steel casting or die mold. These molds are capable of producing metal parts with complex geometries. The die casting process enables the production of most metal parts involved in all casting processes.
Die casting plants usually specialize in die casting of magnesium, zinc or aluminum. Aluminum makes up about 80% of die-cast parts. Hot chamber die casting, also known as gooseneck die casting, is the most widely used die casting process. In this process, the chamber of the injection mechanism is submerged in molten metal, and the "gooseneck" metal supply structure introduces molten metal into the mold cavity. The purpose of using cold chamber die casting is usually to reduce machine wear. The liquefied metal is loaded directly into the injection mechanism, eliminating the need to submerge the injection mechanism in molten metal.
